/// Eğer Marmoromancy var olsaydı, mermer veya ebru üzerinden geleceği okumaya dayanan bir kâhinlik yöntemi olurdu. Ortak araştırma ve deneylerimizde önemli olan, Ebru'nun barındırdığı formları ve figürleri, sanat pratiğimiz ve ilgi alanlarımızı kullanarak hikâyelendirmek ve kâhinlerin de benzer yöntemler kullanıp kullanmadıklarını sorgulamaktı. Bir dekoratif sanat tekniğiyle (ebruyla), bakılmış olan kahve fallarımızdan tanıdık şekil ve figürleri deneysel bir performans dahilinde bir araya getirirken, bu türden bir yöntemin imkanlarını araştırdık. Bu ortak çalışmayla, eylemlerimizin, ebruyu meydana getiren şekil ve figürleri etkileyip etkilemediklerini; görülen prototipsel ve sembolik figürlerin, ritüelistik müzik ve hareket halindeki bedenden yayılan fiziksel titretişimlere maruz kaldıklarında değişip değişmediklerini sorguladık.

28 Kasım Pazartesi gününden 2 Aralık Cuma gününe kadar Nazlı Moripek ve Selen Solak’ın katılımlarıyla İMÇ 5533 alanını deneylerimizi gerçekleştirmek üzere çalışma alanı olarak kullanıyoruz.

3 Aralık Cumartesi 09:30 - 18:30 saatleri arasında, el yapımı kitapların sunumu ve canlı müzik performansı (16:00) için sizleri bekliyoruz.

/// If Marmoromancy had existed, perhaps it would have been a technique used by a soothsayer to read fortunes from marble stone and marbling paper (Ebru). What was important in our collaborative research and experimentation was to use our respective art practices and interests to ascertain influences on the interpretation of the forms and images sensed within the Ebru and to question whether or not soothsayers could have used similar techniques. Combining a decorative art technique (marbling-Ebru), the forms and figures found from having our fortunes read from coffee grounds with performative experimentation, we aimed to show the possibility of the use of such a method. With this collaboration we questioned whether or not our actions actually influenced the forms and figures that entered into the making of marbled paper, whether or not the archetypal and symbolic figures seen would or would not change when exposed to ritualistic music and physical vibration emitted from the body in motion.

From Monday, November 28 to Friday, December 2, in collaboration with Nazlı Moripek and Selen Solak, we are using the 5533 space in IMÇ as a working studio to make our experiments.

We hope you will join us for the launch of a series of handmade books and a live music performance (16:00) on Saturday, December 3 from the hours of 9:30 and 18:30.

/// Si la Marmoromancie existait, ce serait une technique de divination qui consisterait à lire l’avenir dans du marbre ou dans des marbrures comme celle de l’ebru. Pour en arriver à s’interroger sur l’existence d’une telle technique, il a fallu faire l’effort de véritablement s’interroger sur l’état de nos pratiques et de nos intérêts respectifs. Nous avons donc croisé, en trio, l’influence d’une technique décorative (l’ebru) au recensement des figures d’une technique divinatoire (la cafédomancie) par un geste performatif qui offre la possibilité d’une Marmoromancie. Cette collaboration nous a permis de bouleverser nos enjeux habituels et pose un regard trouble et inédit sur les liens qui existent ou pas entre la fabrication d’un papier décoratif, la récolte de figures archétypales voir symboliques, la mise en musique presque rituelle de ces figures et la vibration physique ou non qui émanerait de corps en mouvement.

Du lundi 28 novembre au vendredi 2 décembre nous utiliserons l’espace de IMÇ 5533 comme un atelier de fabrication et d’expériences, Nazlı Moripek et Selen Solak nous y rejoindront parfois dans la musique ou l’écriture.

Le samedi 3 décembre nous vous invitons de 9h30 à 18h30 à partager le lancement d’une édition et l’expérience d’une dernière performance live à 16h.

To engage in Istanbul implies dealing with many open questions. One example is the difficulty of defining public space due to complex historical conditioning and diversity. Different life forms and opposites exist in parallel; the historical and the contemporary city, tradition and modernity, periphery and centre. PUBLIC IDEA is linked to preliminary discussions concerning urbanism and transformation processes in a metropolis. The main focus is placed on the artists' perspectives and personal approaches towards the city.

Each project illuminates a different aspect of urban development and reveals a further understanding of the multiple identity of Istanbul. The different approaches are influenced by architectural, societal as well as historical and cultural aspects, exploring the city as a space of possibility.

Per Schumann drew impressions, images and ideas from his stay in Istanbul on a large piece of paper attached to the wall of 5533. This work grew on a daily basis to serve as a means of achieving a deeper more subtle level of perception about the immediate surroundings and of discovering the mysterious and interesting elements of everyday life. It also acted as an extension of his Gartenstudio concept that symbolizes the search for a niche or gap in the tightly-woven fabric of modern urban life.

This work is a response to Istanbul, to the experience of trying to move around the city and create routes and pathways between destinations. It is also an expression of anxiety about getting physically and emotionally lost and an attempt to integrate this fear. Within the performance there are actions made as allegories to ongoing attempts to create an idiosyncratic system, an individual map as a safeguard and as a comfort. Laying wooden planks around the exterior space of 5533 created a meditative path and the regular demarcation of every second pillar through placing a protective evil eye reflects the mental, emotional and physical work that it requires to operate in a strange place. The carrying of the high heels represents the disintegration of an appearance, of a cultural construct of femininity, which fails to translate across cultures. Slowly with care and patience a new way of operating can be discovered.

“Boy’s Room”

Doreen Maloney began her research for a project about male identity as represented in male dolls in the U.S. From her local discount mega store Walmart, she purchased the seductive “Captain America” doll that plays the words, “let’s take them down” and a boy’s t-shirt that echoed the toy’s aggressive quality with the slogan, “Crush, Destroy, Win.” In Maloney’s opinion, “the martial quality of these boy’s toys and clothing is a disturbing reminder of the U.S. global imperialism project, which has bankrupted our country and is fought most often by the poor who have no other alternatives but to enlist in the army to get a college education or to have a job. I find the irony of loving our children and wanting to keep them safe, juxtaposed with the toys we ‘can’ buy for them that encourages aggression and war to be obviously incongruent.” In Istanbul she continued her research by exploring the neighborhood next to 5533 where wholesale inexpensive toys were being sold for distribution to toy stores all over Istanbul. To her surprise, she found no Turkish made military toys, with the exception of a child like doll dressed in military uniform doing a belly dance to Turkish music. Since all the military toys sold in Istanbul, were printed in English and often with U.S. flags, Maloney concluded that this further underscored how the United States is packaged as an ‘aggressor’. Continuing her project on site and using both U.S. and Turkish military images and toys, she transformed the 5533 store window into a “Boy’s Room”. Workers from the shops next to 5533, only responded to the Turkish images and toys used in the window decoration, ignoring the “Captain American” toys, but at the same time, showing pleasure that the artist had made a project against warfare and aggression that encircles the world at this time.

Desiring to incorporate a feminine and warm expression and communication into masculine cosmopolitan city life, at 5533, Roberly Bell continued her “The Other Landscape” project that she had previously conducted in Russia and another venue in Istanbul.

With this communicative project, she invited her audience to participate by taking potted plants from the gallery space out into the city. In exchange for this gift of a potted flower, she asked recipients to send her photographs of the flowers in their new environments.

The purpose of Victoria Rance’s research trip was to subjectively experience personal and shared spaces in the city, in particular she searched for ambivalence about spaces for women. She wanted to experience how they are negotiated and demarcated in comparison to those in London. Her quest began at the Harem in Topkapi Palace, a historical designated space for women that has played an important role in the western imagination. She found the harem quieter, cooler, and more pleasant than the rest of the palace filled with noisy tourists. Similarly, in the mosques, the areas designed for women were sheltered from the noisy hustle and bustle of everyday life. In the Eminönü mosque, she witnessed children playing, chasing, and learning to walk in the shared prayer space. She learned that the demarcation of spaces is more complex than a westerner might suppose. For example, when walking to 5533 she became aware of the impact felt from the different perceptions from different routes. When arriving from the front over the Atatürk Bridge, the building felt very modern and dislocated from the small market streets behind, but when approached from the back, where children play between small local shops and a bath house, the building acts as a barrier separating the market from the busy motorway.

MIND THE GAP is a multi-media, multi-platform arts initiative that was headquartered at IMC 5533 art space September 13-15, 2011. Created by Alexia Mellor and co-organized with Michelle Dunn, MIND THE GAP presented performative and new media work by emerging artists from around the globe addressing gaps and borders of all kinds: geographic and social borders, and technological and spatial gaps. IMC5533 served as a central location for visitors from the community to view video works, participate in interactive works, and get information on the site-specific pieces. With site-specific performances in public spaces around Istanbul, daily guided boat tours on the Bosphorus that offered a new perspective on orientation and the sea, and a virtual interactive mapping project, MIND THE GAP created unique and participatory experiences to revision the ways we experience art.

“Our experience of presenting MIND THE GAP at IMC5533 was a fabulous one that allowed us to see another aspect of the fabric of Istanbul,” says Mellor. “I wanted MIND THE GAP to serve as an alternative means of experiencing art, and the location of IMC5533 allowed us to take these pieces and insert them into a part of the community that really does not interact with tourists, does not typically speak English, and does not frequent the ‘art institution’. It was exactly the type of experience I had hoped to have. We are grateful to the participating artists for being open to this multi-platform presentation format and were excited to see how pleased everyone was with it!”

“We would like to give special thanks to Nancy Atakan and Hannah Sieben for all their support in making this cross-Atlantic project a success,” says organizer Michelle Dunn. “We hope to have the opportunity to work with IMC5533 again in the future.”

In an effort to bridge gaps in location, MIND THE GAP has made all of the included artist projects available online so that they can be accessed from around the world. Although the exhibition at IMC5533 took place September 13-15, the virtual mapping project, Map the Gap, continues. Participants are asked to consider “gaps” of all kinds: gaps in relationships, gaps in space, gaps in time, and photograph them, write about them, create an audio file. From the beginning of June until the end of October, 2011, our off space, 5533, begins a new activity, a Working Table Program, for artists, curators, writers, students and others. 5533 provides a working space for visitors to conduct their work and research. This activity continues to support networking and dialogue - concepts that 5533 has emphasized since its founding. As a part of the Working Table Program guests will rent a desk in the space. As a result of daily interaction and exchange among the guests, an atmosphere for dialogue and networking will be encouraged. In addition to conducting their individual research and materializing their projects, the guests who desire may organize presentations, talks, meeting and workshops. To support their research or to help them complete their projects, 5533 will offer assistance and information about opportunities to be found in the city, access to the 5533’s artist, curator, and institution archives as well as a connection to free Internet. Desks can be rented daily, weekly or monthly.

Ali Kazma's video works show individuals and groups of people performing routine tasks relevant to their professions in medicine, industry, art and crafts. The filmed spaces include a textile factory, repair and design workshops, a slaughterhouse, an operating room and a dance studio. Kazma's approach to his subjects resemble archeology in that it relates to time by means of tracing the human activity. While archeology explores the past lives and cultures of the human beings, Kazma's video work inscibes, studies, collects and documents now, today, the present moment through modes of production of today's artifacts.
Ali Kazma is now working, with a slightly different approach, on a ''book project'' which simultaneously reflects upon the past and present. Being prepared for publication by the Swiss publishing house Editions Take 5, this artist's book includes a selection of photographs taken by Kazma that document the production and conservation processes of books: a large archive of work made at publishers in Switzerland and France, inside the shops that work with both offset and arcaic printing and binding methods and techniques, modern graphic designers, as well as documentation of rare books preserved at various national libraries that range from the first collected works of Shakespeare, to Qurans, from 2000-year-old Greek pieces, to Borges' manuscripts and to e-books.
5533 invites Ali Kazma to talk and expand on his work in progress. The talk will offer the artist and the people around him the possibility to view, reflect upon and try out ideas in relation to this project.

2008 Şubat ayından beri İmç 5.blok’ta 5533 numaralı dükkanda faliyetlerini sürdüren bağımsız güncel sanat mekanı 5533, yeni yıla Nazlı Gürlek direktörlüğünde giriyor.
Bundan sonra 5533’ün direktörü yazar ve küratör Nazlı Gürlek olacaktır. Gürlek'in bağımsız küratöryel pratiğini yazarlık, editörlük ve sergi yapımcılığı olmak üzere üç alanda, bir arada yürüttüğü aktiviteler oluşturur. Nazlı Gürlek, (d. 1981, İstanbul, Türkiye) Floransa’da Resim ve Sanat Tarihi lisansını bitirdikten sonra Londra Goldsmiths Kolej’de Küratörlük yüksek lisans derecesini aldı. 53. Venedik Bienali (İtalya, 2009) Türk Pavyonu’nunda yardımcı küratör olarak çalıştı. İngiltere, İtalya, İspanya, Hollanda ve Türkiye'de bağımsiz ve kurumsal pozisyonlarda çalışmalar gerçekleştirdi. IMpress adlı uluslararası ve bağımsız yayınevinin kurucularındandır. IMpress, 2007 yılında Londra'da kurulmuş olan ve bugün 4 üyesinin İstanbul, Roma, Barselona, Londra ve Dublin şehirlerinde yaşamakta olduğu bir oluşumdur. Sanat yayını ve sergisi arasındaki gittikçe ön plana çıkmakta olan ilişkilere odaklı basılı projeler üretir.
Bu değişim ve yenilenme çalışmaları için 5533 18 Aralık’ta gerçekleştireceği iki etkinlikle çalışmalarına Mart ayına kadar ara verecektir. Bu süre zarfında Video Kurye-uluslararası video arşivi-ve 5533 arşivi randevu ile ziyaretçilere açık olacaktır.

CHANGES ARE TAKING PLACE AT 5533.
Nazlı Gürlek will begin the New Year as the director of the independent contemporary art center 5533 that has sponsored art events since February of 2008 in the store numbered 5533 of the 5th Block of IMC, Unkapani, Istanbul.
Nazlı Gürlek is the new director of 5533. Nazlı Gürlek, (b. 1981, Istanbul, Turkey) whose independent curatorial practice is developed simultaneously through and around 3 modes of production that includes writing, editorship and exhibition making. After obtaining a BA in Painting and Art history from the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, Italy, she received her MFA in Curating at Goldsmiths College, London. She held the position of Assistant Curator for the Pavilion of Turkey at the 53rd Biennale di Venezia (Italy, 2009). She also held various independent and institutional positions in the UK, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and Turkey. She is a founding member of IMpress, an independent and international publishing house founded in 2007 in London, whose members are based between Barcelona, Dublin, Istanbul, London and Rome, and projects aim to explore the evolving relationship and dissolving distinction between art exhibition and art publication.
The directorial change and renovation of 5533 will begin after the two events scheduled for 5533 on December 18, 2010. Until March 2011, access to visitors of 5533’s archive and Video Kurye’s international video archive can be obtained by appointment only.

GARAGE SALE
Since 5533 opened in 2008, it has housed 15 exhibitions, 10 presentations, 11 performances, and 5 talks. Various bits and pieces including a television with a color problem, a rubber boat, a display case, manikins, manikin parts, shelves, lights, and an array of notebooks have been left from these activities. To celebrate the completion of three years at 5533 and to bring everyone together before the New Year, we are selling this miscellaneous array of goods at reasonable prices.

SIRKÜLASYON & BLOW UP 16:00
Seemingly insignificant elements of every day life, empty water bottles and ordinary SMS (text messages), are subject to a recycling process through narration and sound. Eventually, they become loaded with unforeseen meanings and a big bubble is ready to burst. The Berlin based artists, Steffi Weismann and Barbara Loreck, use portable technical devices such as loudspeakers directly attached to the moving body and mobile phones to open up surprising perspectives regarding identity and self-construction. Both performances trigger a communicative situation between performer and audience. Please bring your cell phone.

Nancy Atakan, Volkan Aslan ve Marcus Graf tarafından Şubat 2008’de açılan 5533 geride bıraktığı üç sene içerisinde, onlarca sergi, gösterim, sunum ve söyleşilerin yanı sıra bir çok sanatçı, küratör ve inisiyatifleri elinden geldiği en iyi şekilde misafir etmeye çalıştı. Farklı birçok meslek grubundan ve disiplinlerden inanlarla çalıştı ve komşusundan izleyicisine herkesin üzerinde emeği bulunan bir yapıya dönüştü.

Nancy Atakan’ın fikriyle başlayan bu yapılanma Adnan Yıldız’ın cesaretlendirmesiyle gerçeğe dönüştü ve 5533 isimlerine tek tek yer veremeyeceğimiz birçok kişinin emeğiyle ortaya çıktı. Geçtiğimiz üç yıl içerisinde 5533 15 sergi, 10 sunum, 11 gösterim, 5 konuşmaya ev sahipliği yaptı. Bütün bu etkinliklerin yanı sıra birçok sanatçı inisiyatifini ve kolektifini bir araya getirdi.

Bundan sonra 5533’ün direktörü yazar ve küratör Nazlı Gürlek olacaktır. Gürlek'in bağımsız küratöryel pratiğini yazarlık, editörlük ve sergi yapımcılığı olmak üzere üç alanda, bir arada yürüttüğü aktiviteler oluşturur. Nazlı Gürlek, (d. 1981, İstanbul, Türkiye) Floransa’da Resim ve Sanat Tarihi lisansını bitirdikten sonra Londra Goldsmiths Kolej’de Küratörlük yüksek lisans derecesini aldı. 53. Venedik Bienali (İtalya, 2009) Türk Pavyonu’nunda yardımcı küratör olarak çalıştı. İngiltere, İtalya, İspanya, Hollanda ve Türkiye'de bağımsiz ve kurumsal pozisyonlarda çalışmalar gerçekleştirdi. IMpress adlı uluslararası ve bağımsız yayınevinin kurucularındandır. IMpress, 2007 yılında Londra'da kurulmuş olan ve bugün 4 üyesinin İstanbul, Roma, Barselona, Londra ve Dublin şehirlerinde yaşamakta olduğu bir oluşumdur. Sanat yayını ve sergisi arasındaki gittikçe ön plana çıkmakta olan ilişkilere odaklı basılı projeler üretir.
Bundan sonra Gürlek yönetiminde olacak olan 5533 Mart ayı içerisinde yeni yapısıyla izleyici karşısına çıkacaktır. Bu nedenle 18 Aralık’ta gerçekleştireceği iki etkinlikten sonra Mart ayına kadar çalışmalarına ara verecektir.
Her zaman olduğu gibi 5533 yeni projelere ve önerilere açık olacaktır. Bu süre zarfı içerisinde 5533 arşivi ve Video Kurye Uluslararası Video Arşivi ziyaretçilere randevu ile açık olacaktır.
Geride bıraktığımız 3 yıl içerisinde emeği geçen sizlere teşekkür ederiz. Yeni yılda aynı mekanda görüşmek üzere.

This is not a Farewell letter!

During the three years since Nancy Atakan, Volkan Aslan and Marcus Graf opened 5533, they have hosted numerous exhibitions, performances, presentations and conferences as well as give support to a large number of artists, curators and initiatives. Working together with people from difference professions and disciplines who believed in its potential and with the efforts of both spectators and neighbors, 5533 became a functioning space.
Initially Adnan Yildiz’s initiative transformed Nancy Atakan’s idea into reality, but the joint efforts of innumerable people made 5533. Over the past three years 5533 sponsored 15 exhibitions, 10 presentations, 11 performances, and 5 talks. In addition to these activities, it also brought together several artist initiatives and collectives.
Nazlı Gürlek is the new director of 5533. Nazlı Gürlek, (b. 1981, Istanbul, Turkey) whose independent curatorial practice is developed simultaneously through and around 3 modes of production that includes writing, editorship and exhibition making. After obtaining a BA in Painting and Art history from the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, Italy, she received her MFA in Curating at Goldsmiths College, London. She held the position of Assistant Curator for the Pavilion of Turkey at the 53rd Biennale di Venezia (Italy, 2009). She also held various independent and institutional positions in the UK, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and Turkey. She is a founding member of IMpress, an independent and international publishing house founded in 2007 in London, whose members are based between Barcelona, Dublin, Istanbul, London and Rome, and projects aim to explore the evolving relationship and dissolving distinction between art exhibition and art publication.
Under the directorship of Gurlek, 5533 will re-open in March of 2011. Consequently, the events taking place on December 18th will be the last of this season.
As usual, 5533 will be open to suggestions, propositions, and proposals for new projects. Until March, 5533’s archive and Kurye Video’s film archive will be open by appointment only.
We thank everyone who has helped to make 5533 successful over the past three years. We look forward to seeing you again in the same space next year.

If only we could

Berlin based artist Nadin Reschke uses this proclaimative subjunctive to examine some of her collaborative projects in public space. In her artwork, she engages with social issues, often employing participatory strategies to involve people outside the art context in the work’s development. Her process-based projects trigger communication and create a framework for social action. She has realized several international collaborative projects, for instance 2004-05 so far so good in 14 different countries, 2007 Kalıntı oder von dem was übrig bleibt in Istanbul (TR) with the support of a DAAD-grant and 2009 the language project Tongue in collaboration with Oda Projesi. She is also active as an art mediator and is involved in curatorial projects such as the New Society for Visual Arts (NGBK) in Berlin and works as an Assistant Professor in the Masterprogram „Public Art and New Artistic Strategies“ at Bauhaus University Weimar.

Stephanie Mold, a young Austrian artist who has spent several months in Istanbul during four visits and is now an artist-in-residence at Garanti Platform, opens her exhibition at 5533 on May 15, 2010, with three works she created in Turkey.
As a modus operandi, Stephanie Mold exposes herself to different cultural contexts to research artistic, social, and biographical actions. During this process, she interacts and initiates a dialog with others without predicting the outcome of the process. It could be said that she filters different elements encountered in places and situations in order to create portraits. Using the media of documentation, she varies and adapts the format depending on the nature of the project. In short, this exhibition deals with ’Otherness’ and the difficulties of understanding or merging into another culture. As Dietrich Diederichsen said, "I have to perceive the ’other’ not in relation to myself as a romantic illustration of my adventure, as decorative significant friend or as a foe [...] rather, their ’other’ perspective should help me to leave the cage of individuality, of subjectivity and competition, at least for a while."

In the videoloop, Alterity Maybe, she sings along with a musician who sits in front of her studio on Istiklal Caddesi everyday. Reflecting the tradition of the Atisma, a song duel, they sing together, share the same melody, but both stay inside their own perspective without responding to each other. Their relationship seems to be quite fragile and insecure.
Hello Gümüshane is a roadmovie about her trip as museum guard from Linz (Austria) to Gümüshane (Turkey) to meet the mayor of Gümüshane and to present him with a chair. She left the homogeneous world of the Museum of Modern Art in Linz to go on an adventure, but at the end of the process, she had to look at the place she left from a new perspective.
Also shown in this exhibition is the work entitled Meet me there, a series in which she uses drawing and embroidery to draw the viewer into an intimate dialogue. Using a strange alphabet, she reveals hidden stories about Istanbul.

İstanbul’a yaptığı dört ziyaret ile burada birkaç ay yaşamış olan ve şuanda Platform Garanti bunyesinde yer alan Istanbul Misafirleri Programi bünyesinde İstanbul'da bulunan Avusturyalı genç sanatçı Stephanie Mold, Türkiye’de çalışmış olduğu üç işten oluşan sergisini 15 Mayıs’ta 5533’te açıyor.
Çalışma biçimi olarak Stephanie Mold; sanatsal, sosyal ve biyografik olayları araştırmak adına kendini çeşitli kültürel içeriklere maruz bırakıyor. Bu süreçte, sonucunda ortaya çıkacak olanı tahmin edemeden etkileşime girdiği diğerleriyle diyalog başlatıyor. Portreler yaratmak adına, yerler ve durumlarda karşılaştığı elemanları bir süzgeçten geçirdiği de söylenebilir. Projenin doğasına göre çeşitli formatlara taşıdığı dokümentasyon araçları kullanıyor. Kısacası; bu sergi başkalıkla ve başka bi kültürle anlaşma ve kaynaşmanın zorluklarıyla ilgileniyor.
Dietrich Diederichsen’nin söylediği gibi; „ötekini, kendimle ilişkilendirerek maceramın romantik bir illüstrasyonu şeklinde değil fakat dekoratif önemli bir arkadaş ya da bir rakip olarak görmeliyim (..) daha doğrusu onların ‚öteki’ perspektifi; bireyselliğin, öznelliğin ve rekabetin kafesini terkederken bana yardımcı olmalı.. en azından bir süreliğine..“

‚Başkalık Belki’ adlı videoda, hergün İstiklal Caddesi’ndeki stüdyo binasının kapısında oturan bir müzisyen ile şarkı söylüyor. Bir nevi şarkı düellosu olan atışma geleneğini yansıtırcasına beraber söylüyor, aynı melodiyi paylaşıyorlar fakat ikisi de kendi perspektiflerinde kalarak birbirlerine karşılık vermiyorlar. Ilişkileri oldukça kırılgan ve güvensiz duruyor.

‚Hello Gümüşhane’; Avusturya-Linz’den Türkiye-Gümüşhane’ye doğru, Gümüşhane belediye başkanı ile görüşmek ve ona bir sandalye takdim etmek üzere yola çıkan bir müze görevlisi olarak yaptığı seyahati konu alan bir yol filmi..Linz Modern Sanat Müzesi’nin homojen dünyasını geride bırakarak bir maceraya atılıyor.Ama sürecin sonunda, bıraktığı bu yere yeni bir perspektiften bakıyor.

Sergide aynı zamanda ‚Meet me there’ adlı iş de bulunuyor..Çizim ve nakışı birarada kullanıldığı bu seri, izleyiciyi samimi bir diyaloga itiyor. Tuhaf bir alfebe ile İstanbul hakkında gizli hikayeler ifşa ediyor.

6 yıldır Berlin'de bulunan Ezgi Kılınçaslan, Berlin UdK daki master eğitiminin ardından “Mülkiyetin Derinliği– Derinliğin Mülkiyeti’’ adlı yerleştirmesi ile 12 Nisan – 8 Mayıs tarihleri arasında 5533 güncel sanat mekanında yer alacak.
Ezgi Kılınçaslan’ın son yerleştirme çalışmasına adını veren “Mülkiyetin Derinliği - Derinliğin Mülkiyeti’’ cinsiyet, sınırlar ve mülkiyet kavramları üzerine eğiliyor. Postkolonial perspektifte cinsiyet koşullarını ve onun güçle ilişkisini irdelerken,video, fotoğraf ve enstalasyon gibi farklı disiplinleri bir araya getiriyor. Sanatçı kullandığı malezeme açısından, ilk bakişta bunu sinirli bir coğrafya içinde tematize ediyor gibi görunse de meseleye ,daha derinlikli ve kapsamlı bir sorgulamayla bakma çabasinda. Kullandığı "Hudut Namustur" askeri sloganı ve diğer elemanlar üzerinden kurduğu ilişki ile cinsiyeti kontrol etmek isteyen ataerkil denetleme mekanizmalarını sınırlar ötesi bir tartışma boyutuna çekiyor.

After finishing her masters degree at UdK and living six years in Berlin, Ezgi Kılınçaslan presents her latest installation, between April 12 and May 8 at the contemporary art center 5533.
Kılınçaslan’s latest installation “Property of Deepness – Deepness of Property” deals with concepts related to gender, boundaries, and property. While investigating from a post-colonial perspective the power relations in conditions related to gender, the artist combines interdisciplinary techniques such as video, photography, and installation. From the perspective of the materials used, even though at first glance the theme may appear to be restricted within a narrow geography, she is striving to make a deep and comprehensive investigation of the event. By establishing a relationship between the “Morality is the boundary” military slogan and the other elements, she takes the discussion beyond the boundaries of patriarchic mechanisms attempting to control gender.

This April 2010 presentation of artworks at Istanbul’s Off-Space, 5533, (opening on Saturday, April 3, at 3 p.m.) will feature a representative selection of contemporary productions by young Austrian artists. Videos, photography, objects, performances as well as audio installations will be presented to reflect the artists’ personal experiences as well as their social and political backgrounds.

The exhibition will be accompanied by talks with the artists at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University as well as by an evening with experimental electronic music, art projects, and performances at Dogzstar Club Istanbul (Friday, April 2, 2010 at 10 p.m.). These events aim to stimulate productive exchanges and discussions. Professor Dr. Martin Hochleitner, Director of the Gallery of the Federal Province of Upper Austria, together with Andrea van der Straeten and Hubert Lobnig from the Department of Experimental Design of the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz curated this show.

This exhibition in Istanbul constitutes the second phase of an ongoing exchange between the Department of Experimental Design of the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz and the young and vibrant art scene of Istanbul. During their stay at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul as a part of the Erasmus programme, two students from the Department of Experimental Design, Oona Valarie Schager and Ufuk Serbest, initiated, curated and organised in Linz the first exhibition of young artists from Istanbul.

In April of 2009, this show entitled “Inspiring Stanbul” brought the work of young Turkish artists to the center of Linz for the first time. This event resulted from the co-operation between the University of Art and Industrial Design Linz and “Linz 09 – European Capital of Culture”.

Two folded national flags lie side by side. Shapes and colours are congruent, making it practically impossible to assign them to any specific country; their significant qualities as national flags and their representative symbols disappear in the folds and stacks of fabric. Through simple folding, this work achieves a formal rapprochement between two states and highlights the interchangeability of national identities.
KATHARINA GRUZEI, “Museum Babushka“, C-print, 1.85 m. x 2.20 m., 2008/2009 This photograph attempts to include “working” and “not working” inside a frame. It shows a so called “museum grandmother” in Russia who transforms into the debris of a collapsed ideology. These women continue to work in public transportation or museum institutions because their Udssr pension is not enough for them to live on today. On one hand their bodies represent the former communist state while on the other hand they form an essential mass of workers in public institutions. Their work consists of “doing nothing” while guarding art and waiting for the work shift to end...

"Heimat" is a postcard series of four subjects the artist shot while at an erotic photography workshop. While working at the workshops as a lighting technician, she experienced the absurd reproduction of the erotic alpine clichè...

Differences across intercultural dialogue are a tool for integration. A mutual language forming between Linz and Istanbul makes it possible for individuals of two different cultures to come together. Languages are important in this interaction. The project is an installation involving two stationary and one moving code. When the moving code aligns with the stationary codes, either “zusammen” or “birarada”, words meaning “together” in German and Turkish, appear. The moving key code symbolises intercultural unity and mutual language.

The video installation “Nur für Euch” deals with a traditional method of appropriation: insalivation. The artist puts chocolate-coated almonds in her mouth and sucks off the chocolate, “cleaning” the almonds meticulously with her saliva to present them to her guests with apparent liberality. This work flirts with the very personal “signature” of marking objects with bodily fluids and the resulting rejection.

A logic puzzle known around the world uses the ambivalent feelings between East and West and their paradox incompatibility as a theme. The quasi-naive presentation technique of shadow play in an endless sequence of moving to and fro between the two banks gives the work its shape. What at first glance appears to be the best solution for “harmonising” this interrelationship may prove to be a miscalculation and in fact demands a more farsighted approach.

Turks born in the East Anatolian town of Gümüshane live in Linz. During his visit to the Lentos Art Museum in Linz, the stools used in the museum fascinated the mayor of Gümüshane. Mold who used to work as a museum guard at Lentos saw him admiring the furniture. For this reason, wearing her guard’s uniform, she traveled by bus to visit him in Turkey and present him with such a stool. The purpose of this trip was absurdly disproportionate to the required input of time and money; outside the museum’s premises her guard uniform looked grotesque and actually transformed her into a fictional character. Filmmaker Karolina Szmit accompanied her on this journey.

Nine students and graduates of the programme Sculpture – Transmedial Space and Experimental Design spent one week outside the city. The rural environment triggered a temporary fusion between them and the local farmers. Their freshness, unbridled fun and free, sophisticated minds enabled them to create artworks from materials found at the farmhouses. The exhibition took place as part of an annual event with an audience of up to 20,000 people.

This film is based on dreams and dreamlike recollections executed in six scenes. The observer’s gaze is drawn to a surreal atmosphere in which reality and fiction flounder like fish caught in a net, flit across the water like shadows, and in which fitted kitchens watch themselves being drawn.

CHRISTINE PAVLIC, “The Bench, the Yarn and the Drill Machine ...”, C prints, 2008
The wooden slats of benches in public space are perforated by a drill and embroidered in traditional style with needle and yarn, thereby referencing expressions of local and regional everyday culture. By choosing to use embroidery in wood, the artist’s theme refers to a kitsch homey domesticity that verges between a sense of wellbeing and the insufferably stifling feeling generated by benches that simply invite people to sit down. The project, executed in Tyrol, was documented in photographs.

Initially using the nostalgic postcard format, the “Postkastell” shows different impressions, sketches, and images of four young women from Linz. Visitors can swap items they have brought along (preferably Turkish postcards, but also bus tickets, sketches, …) for one of these postcards. Thus the content of the “Postkastell’” will slowly change into a Turkish collection.
“Postkastell – Posta kutusu” is an independent exhibition, installation, platform, castle, intercultural exchange, a place of transformation and variation, take-away-art, and a shifting collection.

The participants crochet and talk in loosely organised, communicative meetings announced by a flyer and on the Internet. This feminist project by Antonia Prochaska attempts to involve a great variety of people with highly different cultural, religious and work backgrounds.

Certificates are pieces of paper with printing or writing on them. Their value derives from their use by official authorities. Symbols and signatures transform them into documents. In this work, the artist’s collected certificates and references are torn into shreds and then dissolved in water. With a deckle, sheet after sheet of new, “ungraded” paper is created.

NORA RIEDL, “My Friend, the Mayor of Istanbul”, poster work executed in the city of Istanbul, original size 1.7 m. x 30 m. June 2009
The starting point of this work was a chance group photograph taken of some students, including the artist, Nora Fiedl and the Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbas, who during the artist’s stay was featured on all municipal advertising posters. This photo and the imagine friendship with Kadir Topbas formed the nucleus of the artist’s wishes for change in Istanbul. Instead parks, motorways or sports halls, when the artist asked the mayor to inaugurate a building housing a gay rights office, a department for gender studies and a centre training women to defend themselves against domestic violence, she was surprised that he was happy to perform these tasks. Although the huge banner advertising this event was illegally hung from a bridge above an eight-lane motorway and removed after just a few hours, media response to the action was very strong.

In autumn of 2008, while artists Karoline Rudolf and Antonia Prochaska were staying in the city of Villach, a right-wing populist politician Jörg Haider died in a car accident that was his fault. Quite unintentionally, the artists witnessed the massive mourning, despair and elevation to cultural icon that the local press and population accorded Haider. Some compared the death of Carinthia’s most prominent politician with the mourning for Lady Diana Spencer; even the local radio stations continuously featured Elton John’s “Time to Say Goodbye”.

Ever since their introduction, newspapers, information carriers, have not only been employing the medium of writing, but complemented their content with pictures and illustrations. “Simplification” focuses on these concrete/figurative messages to zero in on visual language and its effects. The daily newspaper becomes an artwork and demands its completion by the recipient. Quotes, not dictations are the objective.

Situated close to the city’s main square, Pfarrplatz is a square at the centre of Linz. Its re-organisation from a place for cars into a place for humans has created a centrally located open space. Not only can it be adapted in a variety of ways, but it also provides a new perspective on itself and its surroundings.
After moving into a flat directly on-site, the square became an eye-catcher for the artist. As an object of scrutiny, Stipek analysed the area using stop-motion studies. In due course, he carried out various experiments in which the surface functioned as a kind of drawing paper and/or stage in the broadest sense. This among other factors inspired the series “front window”.

Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien’de gerçekleştirilecek sergi ve etkinlikler projesi İstanbul-Off-Spaces ile, birkaç yıldır gelişen bir olguya, İstanbul’da sayıları giderek artan ve önem kazanmaya başlayan, ticari olmayan bağımsız proje ve sanat mekanlarına, dikkat çekmek istiyoruz.
Etkinliğin amacı, İstanbul’daki projeler ve çalışanları ile diyaloğa girmek ve Berlin’de, kendilerini ifade edebilecekleri bir platform sunmaktır.
İstanbul’daki sanat mekanları, sivil toplum diskurlarının önemli alanlarını oluşturuyorlar. Gerek giderek yoğunlaşan uluslararasılaşma, gerekse artan bağımsızlık ve özgüven sayesinde, mekanlar, yayınevleri, dergiler ve çağdaş güzel sanatların aktörleri, İstanbul’daki toplumsal ve politik tartışmaların öne çıkan öğeleri haline geldiler.
Sergideki sanatsal çalışmalar ve dokümantasyonların yanısıra, özellikle söyleşiler ve konferanslarla da İstanbul’daki kültür politikalarının aktörlerinin mercek altına alması amaçlanıyor. Gazete formatında çıkarılan yüksek tirajlı bir yayın sergiyi duyuracak, aynı zamanda sürekli dönüşen ve giderek gelişen sözkonusu bu kültürel olguya görsellik kazandıracaktır.

Istanbul-Off-Spaces exhibition and event in Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien is meant to draw attention to a phenomenon that has arisen in recent years: the increasing number and growing influence of project groups and independent non-commercial art spaces in Istanbul.
In Istanbul, art project spaces act as important locations for social discourse and discussions about civil society. As a result of increasing internationalization, but also as a consequence of growing independence and burgeoning self-awareness, locations, publishers, magazines and players in the field of contemporary visual arts have established themselves as outstanding elements of social and political discourse in Istanbul.
The activities in Berlin are aimed at initiating a dialogue between these projects and their protagonists offering a presentation platform in Berlin.

İstanbul'un çeşitli semtlerinde bulunan bağımsız sanat mekanları, kolektifler, sanatçı insiyatiflerini ve oluşumlara açık çağrıda bulunarak hazırlanan bu proje Belirli Günler ve Haftalar başlıklı dizinin ilk ayağını oluşturuyor. İletişimin, paylaşımın ve pratiklerin geliştirilmesini amaçlayan bu proje aynı zamanda izleyiciye İstanbul'da faaliyetlerini sürdüren bu oluşumları yakından tanıma fırsatı veriyor.
Mekan kurgusunu bir İstanbul panoraması şeklinde gerçekleştiren 5533, insiyatif ve bağımsız mekanlara ait dokümanlara da yer veriyor.
Bütün bu görsel sunum ve dokümanter çalışmalar ile birlikte sergi süresince diğer mekanların komşuları ile yapılmış söyleşinin video sunumu da 14 Şubat – 28 Mart 2009 tarihleri arasında izlenebilir.

In February of 2008, inside the store numbered 5533 at 5th Block of IMC in Unkapanı, Istanbul, 5533 opened its first project to the public. To commenorate the completion of this establishment’s fırst year, the first in a series of projects under the title of “Special Days and Weeks” begins on Saturday, February 14, 2009.

This first in a series of projects under the title of “Special Days and Weeks” was organized around an open invitation to independent art spaces, collectives, artist initiatives, and initiatives of all types located in various real and virtual neighborhoods of Istanbul. Aiming to create opportunities for communication, networking, sharing, and artistic practice, this event gives spectators a chance to become closely acquainted with the İstanbul initiatives. The exhibition in the space at 5533 was organized as an Istanbul panorama that also includes documentation of these initiatives and independent spaces.

Together with the visual presentation and documentation, during the exhibition from February 14 through March 28, 2009, a video film showing interviews with neighbors of 5533 and the other initiatives can be seen.

“Miguel Rothschild plays Miguel Rothschild”

İMÇ’de bulunan sanat mekanı 5533, Arjantinli sanatçı Miguel Rothschild’ın iki video filmini sunuyor.
Rothschild’ın post-modern filmlerinde, insan vücudu ve sanatçı ruhunun kırılganlığı gündeme geliyor. Filmlerde, ‘Sanat’ın anlamı da ironik bir yaklaşımla sorgulanıyor. Konuları, her ne kadar trajedi kökenli de olsa, öldüren deha mitinin hafifçe alaya alınmasıyla neşeli ve komik filmlerinin daha ilk anından itibaren Rothschild’, sıradan bir insan olmak için yaratılmadığını açıkça belli ediyor. Derya Yücel’in küratörlüğündeki sergi 5 Temmuz – 2 Ağustos 2008 tarihleri arasında izlenebilir.

Killer Tears (1999) isimli video filmi sanatçının hazırladığı 73 flipbooktan oluşur. Filmin baş kahramanı olan Miguel, neo-fantastik bir anti-kahramandır. Doğuştan ağlayamayan bu kahraman hayatı boyunca acı çeker ve tek bir damla gözyaşı dökemez, ta ki bir gün beklenmedik bir şekilde Miguel Rothschild’ın gözlerinden yaşlar dökülmeye başlar. İki farklı fantastik güce sahip bu gözyaşlarından biri ölümcüldür diğer gözyaşı ise onun eskiden yaşadığı başarısızlığa karşın muhteşem sanat eserleri yaratmasına yardımcı olur. Miguel şövalenin başına oturur oturmaz gözyaşları yeteneksizce boyanmış tabloları delip geçer ve onu büyük bir sanatçıya dönüştürür.

The Messiah Fights Back (2007) isimli videosu melodramatik bir öykü ile başlar ve kahraman yine Miguel’dir. Galeri sahibi bir kadın, sanatçının işlerini ve sanata dair eski moda romantik tavrını beğenmez. Sanatçı bu reddediş sonucunda bir yıkım yaşar ve galericiyi zehirlemeye karar verir. Ne var ki, tüm beceriksizliği ile içecekleri karıştırır ve istemeden kendi hüzünlü sanatçı yaşamına son verir. Hikaye bundan sonrasında uzun bir cennet-cehennem-evren yolculuğu ile devam eder. Film, klişeler, bildik mekânlar, tükenmiş temalar, sanatçının kendisine, kendi işlerine ve sanat tarihine göndermelerle doludur.

MANiFATURA, 2007 yazinda istanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Kültür Yönetimi,
Sanat Yönetimi, Sahne ve Gösteri Sanatlari Yönetimi ve Tasarim
Kültürü ve Yönetimi Sertifika Programi ögrencileri tarafindan sanat,
tasarim ve zanaatin bilinen sinirlarini asmak ve yeni üretim
stratejileri kesfetmek üzere gerçeklestirlen deneysel bir atölye
çalismasiydi.

Ortak çalismanin eseri olan bitmis "is"lerden çok, ortak
çalisma sürecine odaklanan MANiFATURA kapsaminda Türkiye, Gürcistan
ve Ermenistan'dan genç sanatçilar ve tasarimcilar Unkapanini görmüs geçirmis
sokaklarinda ve zanaatkar atölyelerinde
gündelik yasamin parçasi oldular.Olusturulan bes ayri çalisma grubu
Temmuz ayi boyunca bir dizi seminer takip edip tasarimci Erdem Akan
ve küratör Marcus Graf'in çizdigi kavramsal çerçeveyi
tartistilar. Gruplarda bir sanat, bir tasarim ögrencisi ve bir
zanaatkar yer aldi. Bir sanat veya tasarim yönetimi ögrencisi üretim
sürecini koordine etti. Grup üyeleri bir yandan mekani, malzemeyi,
semtin kendine özgü hikayelerini, diger yandan Tarihi Yarimada'
yi ilgilendiren kentsel dönüsüm planlari kapsaminda alinan tahliye
kararlarinin esnaf arasinda yarattigi endiseyi ortak çalismalarina
dahil ettiler. 20 Agustos - 20 Eylül 2007 tarihleri arasinda
Hizir Bey Sokagi'nda çesitli atölyelerde bir sergi açildi;
sokaktaki çay bahçesinde semt sohbetleri düzenlendi ve bölgeyi
tanitan bir rehber taslagi hazirlandi.

MANiFATURA @ 5533, projeyi iMÇ'nin arka sokaklarından iMÇ'
nin içindeki 5533 adli sanat mekanina tasiyarak projenin sonuçlarini
degerlendirmeyi, kent mekaninda sanat, tasarim ve zanaat arasindaki
iliskiyi sorgulayan MANiFATURA'nin baslattigi tartismayi yeni
bir düzlemde yeniden ele almayi amaçliyor. 5533'de 2007 yilinda
üretilen islerin yani sira projenin fotograf ve video dokümantasyonu
sergilenecek. Ayrica, irem Tok, Özgür Demirci ve Alpaslan Arslan
MANiFATURA projesinin kavramsal çerçevesi etrafinda yeni ve mekana
özgü tasarlanmis isler üretecek.

Manifatura @ 5533
An Experimental Project about the Interconnection between Art, Design and Craft

Manifatura was an experimental workshop during the summer of 2007 that brought
together art, design and craft in order to cross the borders of the known and
discover new strategies of production.
Coordinated by students of Cultural Management, Art Management, Management of
Performing Arts, Design Culture and Mangement Certificate Program at Istanbul Bilgi
University, Manifatura exposed the producer’s interception with the city, the
dialogue between art, craft and design, and the response of the local community.
Manifatura focused on the process rather than the completed art/design work. Young
artists and design students from Turkey, Georgia and Armenia, became active parts of
the old streets of Unkapanı and the workshops of the local craftsmen. Five
working groups were organized. These groups followed a series of seminars during
July and discussed the conceptual framework drawn by designer Erdem Akan and curator
Marcus Graf. Each group was composed of one fine arts student, one design student
and one craftsman, and their coordination was managed one arts or design management
student. The group members included in their projects the location and its stories
as well as the concerns of the local craftsmen on the urban regeneration plans for
the Historical Peninsula and the orders of evacuation resulting from such plans.
Talks and seminars, an exhibition between the 20.08. and 20.09 in various workshops
on the Hızır Bey Sokağı and an exercise for a district guide
were organized.

The exhibition Manifatura @ 5533 is a translocation of the project from the back of
IMÇ’s streets to the art space 5533 within IMÇ in order to analyze Manifatura by
reviewing its results and opening up further discussions about the interconnection
of art, design and craftsmanship. At 5533, works created during the summer 2007 as
well as photo and video documents are exhibited. Besides that, Irem Tok, Özgür
Demirci and Alpaslan Arslan create new site specific works at 5533 that circle
around the conceptual framework of Manifatura.

“Üretebilmek Üzerine” İstanbul’u çıkış noktası olarak alan ve süreç içinde farklı mekanlarda, yeni sanatçıların ve üretimlerinin sunumlarıyla gelişecek uluslararası bir grup sergisidir. Proje; ürün, üretim ve bu faktörlerin toplumdaki yeri üzerine bir inceleme yapma arzusundan kaynaklandı. Proje için İstanbul'a davet ettiğimiz sanatçılar; yerel üreticilerle çalışarak, üretim şartlarına atıfta bulunan, buradaki durumu yansıtan ve üretim sürecinin küresel boyutuna değinen yeni işler üretecekler. Sanatçıların bir kısmı da proje taslaklarını gerçekleştirerek İstanbul'da üretilmesi için Altı Aylık ve nüans'ı aracı olarak kullanacak. Üretim kaynaklarına ulaşmak açısından İstanbul en zengin şehirlerden biri. Varoşlardaki tekstil, konfeksiyon atölyelerinden, Tahtakale'deki, Mahmutpaşa'daki binbir çeşit eski handa, dar sokak larda konuşlanan küçük dükkanlara; Galata'daki neon üreticilerinden Karaköy'de onlarca çeşit elektronik malzeme satıcısına kadar İstanbul geniş bir skala sunuyor. Üretim süreci, AB ülkeleri gibi hizmet toplumu ülkelerinde, şehrin yaşamından neredeyse tamamen dışlanmışken, İstanbul'da günlük hayatın önemli dinamiklerinden biri. Bu ülkelerde sunulan ürünlerin çoğu, farklı ülkelerde üretilip ithal edilirken, İstanbul'da ise bu kaynaklar ulaşılabilir ve şeffaf. Bu özellikleriyle Türkiye, dünya endüstrisi bağlamında Avrupa'da tercih edilen üretim merkezlerinden biri olarak adlandırılabilirken, parametreler gittikçe üretime dayalı bir toplumdan, büyük alışveriş merkezlerinin, tek tipleştirilmiş uluslararası markaların baskısı altında tüketime dayalı bir topluma doğru kayıyor. Bu değişimin hızı aynı zamanda çok canlı bir ortam yaratıyor. Bu projedeki ilgi alanımız, toplumun içinde bulunduğu dönüşümü temsil eden ürünleri gözlemlemek, anlamak ve sanatçılar aracılığıyla müdahelede bulunmak. Proje süresince birlikte çalışılan üreticilerin kartları toplanarak proje sonunda küçük bir rehber kitap haline getirilecek ve süreci belgeleyen bir de katalog hazırlanacak.

26 Nisan'da 5533'de başlayacak olan proje, Temmuz ayında yeni üretimlerle Apartman Projesi'nde olacak. “Üretebilmek Üzerine” Kunstvlaai (Amsterdam, Mayıs 2008), nüans (Düsseldorf, Eylül 2008) sergilenecek.

"On Produceabilty" is an international composed and organised groupshow that has its starting point in Istanbul and is then going to travel and develop throughout European venues.
Our project is about products, production and their placement in society. We invite artists to Istanbul to reflect on and refer to local conditions and global dimensions of production by creating new artworks.
In Istanbul the steps of the production processes are often located in the immediate neighbourhood and become transparent and accessible. They are not externalised like in most service societies like Germany or other EU countries. Manufacturing is still part of the everyday life. While Turkey is a preferred production location of Europe in the context of world industry the parameters are shifting from a production based to a consumption oriented society with overwhelming shopping malls and standardised franchise companies. The rapidity and the simultaneousness of this development creates a situation that is highly vibrant. Our interest is to observe, understand and interfere this state of society being in transisssion represented by its products.
With their travel to Istanbul the artists have the possibility and opportunity to use the huge number of large and small manufacturing places to take advantage of and to use this transparency of production for their artistic purpose.
We are convinced that the high grade of accessibility and interfereability of production processes in Istanbul will lead to unique works of art.

In 2006 eight students of Cultural Sciences and Art Mediation at the University of Hildesheim, Germany, founded Kunstgymnastik (KG), a forum for discussion of recent concepts and developments in the field of fine arts and art-mediation. In their opinion, a closer understanding of contemporary art is only possible through joint discussion.

Workshop for Art-Mediation/Art Education:

‘One right way’ to perceive a work of contemporary art does not exist. Every viewer has his or her own approach for construction of meaning and making sense.

Three members of the group KG, Nadja Susemichel, Almut von Koenen and Catharina Müller, will come to Istanbul as group representatives. These memebers will invite the assistants working at 5533, and others interested in art mediation, especially those saying they ‘don’t understand art’, to participate in a joint experiment.

KG will temporarily open the group to new ‘members for a day’. The aim will be to test and generate tools for accessing art and finding new ways to make sense of art.

During this day, the old and new members will visit an exhibition of contemporary art in Istanbul, and note all impressions, questions, ideas in a notebook. Afterwards all workshop participants will meet again at 5533 for tea and toast and to jointly discuss their impressions and questions.

At the same time, the other KG members will carry out a similar experiment in Germany. The revised documentation of both projects will be included in the 5533 archive.

Güncel kavramlar ve yeni oluşumların tartışıldığı bir platform olan Kunstgymnastik (KG), 2006 Yılında Hildesheim Üniversitesi Kültür Bilimi ve Sanat Bölümü’nden sekiz öğrenci tarafından kuruldu. KG’ in temel düşüncelerinden biri çağdaş sanatın ancak tartışılarak anlaşılacağıdır.
Tek bir doğru yoktur ve çağdaş sanat yapıtlarını izleyici kendi yaklaşımını inşa ederek anlamlaştırır; noktasından hareket eden KG grubunun üç üyesi bir gün için kapılarını 5533’ de yeni üyelere açıyor.

KG Grubunun gerçekleştireceği bir günlük atölye çalışmasının amacı çağdaş sanat yapıtlarını değerlendirmek ve anlamak için yeni yöntemler oluşturup denetlemek.
17 Nisan Perşembe günü KG yeni katılımcılar ve kendi üyelerinden üç kişi ile bir gün içerisinde İstanbul’da belirlenecek bir sergi ya da müzeyi ziyaret ederek izlenimleri ve fikirleri not edeceklerdir. Sonrasında bütün 5533’de buluşarak çay ve tost eşliğinde bu izlenimleri ve soruları tartışmaya açacaktır.
Almanya’da bulunan diğer KG üyeleri ise aynı çalışmayı Almanya’da yeni katılımcılarla eşzamanlı olarak yapacaklardır. Her iki çalışmalardan ve tartışmalardan çıkan metinler belgelenecek ve 5533 arşivine dahil edilecektir.

Born in 1971 in Istanbul, Ali Kazma graduated from Robert College in 1989. In 1993, he completed his undergraduate studies in the United States. After briefly studying photography in London, in 1995 he returned to the United States to study film. He received his MA from the The New School in New York City where he worked between 1995 and 1998 as a teaching assistant. In 2000 he returned to Istanbul, opened a film production company, and between 2001 and 2003 taught part time at Bilgi University. After settling in Istanbul, he has produced not only art films, but also commercial products and a full-length documentary. Among others, he has exhibited his work in 7th International Istanbul Biennial (2001), Tokyo Opera City (2001), Platform Garanti Center for Contemporary Art (Istanbul, 2003), Cetinje Biennial (2004), Istanbul Modern (2004), 2nd Istanbul Pedestrian Exhibition (2005), 9th Havana Biennial (Cuba, 2006), San Francisco Art Institute (2006), 10th International Istanbul Biennial (2007), and has opened a solo exhibition at the Francesca Minini Via Massimiano (Italy, 2008). Presently, three of his videos are being shown on Istiklal Caddesi, Beyoglu, in a group show, “Oditoryumda Sanat” sponsored by the Vehbi Koc Foundation.

During the 10th International Istanbul Biennial, Kazma presented an installation consisting of four videos, Ceramist Studio (2007), Clock Master (2006), Brain Surgeon (2006), and Slaughterhouse (2007), projected simultaneously side by side in the bottom floor of IMC. Unlike most of the other video work shown in IMC as a part of the “World Factory”, Kazma’s videos were optimistic. In contrast to many of the other films shown, he did not choose work places using informal labor. He did not show exploitation or poor working conditions.
At the “Oditoryumda Sanat” exhibition he is exhibiting again Brain Surgeon (2006) and Slaughterhouse (2007) while showing Jean Factory (2008) for the first time in Istanbul. Jean Factory emphasizes the detail and craftsmanship used to produce the seemingly simple jean hanging in shops around the world. Every crease, every wrinkle, every gradation of color is highly thought out and calculated. In his seemingly obsessive exploration of contemporary human production and activity, he also made Rolling Mills (2007), showing a steel factory and Household Goods Factory (2008), a film about a factory in Italy owned by Alessi . This series of films cannot be seen as documentary and socioeconomic issues surface only indirectly. The films consist of a series of close-ups, fragments, and glances at sophisticated use of skills. While highly sophisticated technology is present, the skilled hand is still important. In his videos, the gruesome becomes beautiful and the mundane becomes complicated. While viewing highly skilled workers in different contemporary environments, we are reminded of the subtle aesthetic and technical skills required to produce a contemporary high quality work of art. All require dexterity of mind/hand/eye, and ability for cutting/sewing/reshaping, to make a highly refined finished product, a masterpiece. All the places and activities chosen share almost allusive similarities even though they are totally unique.

We find it significant for him to return to IMC and make a presentation about his artistic viewpoint, discuss his artistic practice, and explain the direction his most recent work is taking.

1971 İstanbul doğumlu Ali Kazma, 1989 yılında Robert Lisesi’nden mezun oldu. 1993 yılında ABD’de lisans eğitimini tamamladı. Londra’da kısa bir süre fotoğraf eğitim aldıktan sonra 1995 yılında tekrar ABD’ye film eğitimi almak için döndü. 1995-1998 yılları arasında New York’ta The New School’da master programıyla eş zamanlı öğretim elemanı olarak görev yaptı. 2000 Yılında İstanbul’a dönerek film yapım şirketini kurdu. 2001-2003 yılları arasında misafir öğretim görevlisi olarak Bilgi Üniversitesi’nde ders verdi. İstanbul’a yerleştikten sonra sanatsal filmlerinin yanı sıra kendi kurduğu yapım şirketinde belgeseller ve reklam filmleri çekti. 7. Uluslar arası İstanbul Bienali (2001), Tokyo Opera Şehir (2001) Platform Garanti Çağdaş Sanat Merkezi (2003), Cetinje Bienali (2004), İstanbul Modern (2004), 2. İstanbul Yaya Sergileri (2005), 90. Havana Bienali (2006), San Francisco Sanat Enstitüsü (2006), 10. İstanbul Bienali (2007) ve kişisel sergi Francesca Mimini Via Massimiano İtalya (2008) Ali Kazma’nın katıldığı sergilerden bazıları. Bu ay içerisinde İstanbul’da Vehbi Koç Vakfı’nın desteklediği “Oditoryumda Sanat” başlıklı projede üç çalışması gösterilmektedir.

10.Uluslararası İstanbul Bienali’e Ali Kazma İMÇ’de Seramik Atölyesi (2007), Saat Tamircisi (2006), Beyin Cerrahı (2006) ve Mezbaha (2007) isimli dört video yerleştirmesi ile katılmıştır. “Oditoryumda Sanat” başlıklı sergiye ise Beyin Cerrahı, BlueJean Fabrikası (2008) ve Mezbaha ile katılmıştır. Ali Kazma videolarında çağdaş insanın üretim ve aktivitelerini tutkulu bir şekilde ve derinlemesine araştırır. Bu araştırma serisi bir belgesel değildir. Toplumsal ve ekonomik konuları dolaylı bir şekilde ele alır. 10. İstanbul Bienali sırasında İMÇ’ de “Dünya Fabrikası” başlığı altında sunulan çoğu eserin tersine, Ali Kazma’nın video eserleri iyimser olup, sunduğu dört film kötü çalışma koşulları ve sömürü ile ilişkili değildir.

Filmlerinde yakın çekimler, parçalanmış sahneler, ani geçişler ve sofistike beceriler görülür. İleri teknolojinin imkanları ve el becerisi Ali Kazma filmlerinde yan yanadır. İtici, iğrenç ve korkunç sahneleri güzelleştirdiği gibi basit olanın da çok karmaşık olduğunu gösterir. Ali Kazma’nın filmlerinde insan, el becerisi ve teknolojinin yardımıyla güzel bir ürün yaratırken eş zamanlı olarak sanatçı da aynı yöntemle sofistike filmlerini ortaya çıkarır. Hem sanatçı hem de filmlerinde bulunan figurler zihin, göz ve el becerilerini kullanarak keser, birleştirir ve bitirir. Sonuç olarak her ikisi de ortaya bir eser çıkartır. Filmlerde seçilen mekan ve eylemler eşsiz olmalarına rağmen derin bir benzerlik ve birlikteliği içerirler.

5533 adına sanat mekaninda, Marcus Graf, Volkan Aslan ve Nancy Atakan, 12 Nisan Cumartesi saat 14:00’te sanatçı Ali Kazma’yı ağırlamaktan mutluluk duyar. 10. İstanbul Bienali sırasında da İMÇ’de bulunan Ali Kazma’nın bu mekana geri dönerek yeni projelerinden bahsedecek ve video sunumu yapacak olmasını 5533 olarak anlamlı buluyoruz.

5533, 8 Mart Dünya Kadınlar Günü kapsamında bir dizi etkinliğe ev sahipliği yapmaktadır.Yaklaşık dört gün sürecek bu etkinlik dizisi çerçevesinde sunumlar, video gösterimleri ve performansların yanı sıra bir tartışma platformu yaratılması hedeflenmektedir. İMÇ'nin mimarı Doğan Tekeli'nin ofisinde çalışan aynı zamanda Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi, Sanat ve Tasarım Fakültesi'nde İMÇ'ye de yer verdiği yüksek lisans tezini hazırlamakta olan mimar Sena Özeren 5533'de 29 Şubat Cuma ve 1 Mart Cumartesi günleri saat 12:30'da başlayacak olan iki günlük seminer düzenliyor. Herkese açık olan özellikle de İMÇ esnafının ilgisinin beklendiği bu seminerde, YER(SİZ)LEŞME teması altında İMÇ'nin 40 yılda gelmiş olduğu noktaya görsel ve sözel anlatımlarla yer verilecektir.

On Friday February 29 and Saturday March 1, Sena Özeren who in addition to working as an architect in İMÇ's architect, Dogan Tekeli's office, is also writing her master's thesis on İMÇ for the Design and Art Faculty at Yildiz University, will conduct a workshop. In this workshop entitled "BECOMING PLACE (LESS)" that is open to İMÇ workers as well as the general public, she will present visual and verbal information about the architectural history of İMÇ and its situation after forty years.

5533 VİTRİN ilk sergisini İrfan Önürmen’ nin kadın portrelerini ele aldığı ‘8 Yüz” adinda işleri ile açıyor. Önürmen bu işlerinde Türkiye’nin en önemli sorunlarından biri olan kadına karşı şiddeti konu etmektedir. Sanatçı günlük bir gazetede gördüğü sekiz kadın imgesini gelinlik tüllerine boyayarak kadının masumiyetine ve sosyal duruşuna gönderme yapıyor. Üç boyutlu etkiyi elde etmek için tülleri katmanlar halinde kullanıyor. İmgelerinde kullandığı sudan sebeplerle katledilmiş bu kadınların tek suçları internette chat yapmak, kahvaltıyı geç hazırlamak, fazla banyo yapmak, hamile kalmak vs. gibi nedenlerdi. Sanatçı işlerinde bu sosyal olguları izlediği gazetelerin sayfa parçalarını kullanarak medyaya, ayrıca, perde, simli kumaş, dantel gibi elemanları kullanarak gerçek olana değiniyor. “Kadınların toplum içindeki duruşu”nu sorguladığı, portrelerin içine gizlediği kadınların katledilme nedeni ile ilgili imgeler ile de erkeklerin kadınlarla hayatı nasıl paylaştığı sorusuna gönderme yapıyor.

5533 STORE-WINDOW is opening its first exhibition with İrfan Önürmen’s female portrait series entitled “8 Faces”. In this work, Önürmen uses a theme that he believes to be one of Turkey’s most important problems, severe and violent brutality towards women. In his layered three-dimensional tulle paintings of eight female images taken from newspaper clippings, he refers to women’s social position and to their innocence. These women were murdered for such mundane reasons as fixing a late breakfast, taking too many baths, becoming pregnant, or chatting on internet. By using in his work actual pieces of the newspaper pages where the social facts have been written, he refers to the role media plays in these events. By using elements such as lace, curtain and silver threaded material in his work, he touches on reality. By hiding in the portraits the reasons for their masacre, he questions women’s position in society while at the same time, refers to the question of how males share their lives with females.

Günümüz sanat ortamı üzerine birçok bilgiyi bir arada bulabileceğiniz kütüphanesi, sanatçı dosya arşivi ve sound art bölümlerinin yanı sıra, sergileme amaçlı tasarlanan vitrininde düzenlenecek sergilerle, 5533 deneysel bir sanat mekanıdır.
Istanbul ’un önemli ticaret merkezlerinden biri olan IMÇ’ in 5.Blok’unda eski bir dükkanın yeniden dekore edilmesiyle oluşturulan 5533, gerek IMÇ çevresi, gerekse İstanbul sanat ortamına etki etmeyi amaçlıyor.
Periyodik bir düzenle gerçekleştirilecek olan sanatçı konuşmaları, atölye çalışmaları, her katılımcının kendi fikir ve bilgilerini rahatlıkla paylaşabileceği yuvarlak masa tartışmalarının yanı sıra video gösterimleri, performanslar ve vitrin sergileri ile interaktif bir mekan.
5533, mekanın kurucuları Volkan Aslan, Nancy Atakan ve Marcus Graf’ın hazırladığı ve proje koordinasyonunu Didem Yazıcı ve Gökhan Toptaş’ın üstlendiği Vitrin 5533 projesi kapsamında düzenlenecek 5 sergiden oluşan dizinin ilk bölümü, IMÇ çalışanlarından Nuri Güleç’in projeye davet edilen 50 sanatçı çalışmasının içinden seçtiği İrfan Önürmen’e ait bir proje ile ziyaretçilere açılıyor.
5533, 23 Şubat Cumartesi 2008 tarihinde “Vitrin” sergisinin yanı sıra “Koridor” video gösterimi, “Proje” sanatsal sunumu, Nomad “ctrl_alt_del” ve MASA’nın Önder Özengi sergisine de ev sahipliği yapıyor.

An experimental art space, 5533, brings together a store window designed as an exhibition area with a variety of information about today’s art community in a library, an archive of artist’s portfolios, and a sound art section, Located in a re-decorated store in the 5th block of IMC (Istanbul Trader’s Association), one of Istanbul’s important business centers, 5533 aims to influence both the Istanbul art and the IMC communities.

In addition to video shows, performances, and window exhibitions, this interactive space will periodically host artist talks, workshops, and round table discussions where participants can freely share their ideas and knowledge.
Didem Yazici and Gokhan Toptas coordinated a project formulated by the founders of 5533, Volkan Aslan, Nancy Atakan, and Marcus Graff. From a pool of 50 artists, Nuri Gulec, the owner of a local tea house, chose Irfan Onurman to design art work for the first of a series of five exhibitions as a part of Store Window 5533.
Together with the store window exhibition, on Saturday February 23, 2008, 5533 will also open a video show in “Corridor”, show work by participants of “Nomad” "ctrl_alt_del", display artistic presentations of several “Projects”, as well as present “MASA”, the host of Önder Özengi’s exhibition.
